The tsunami warning for Taranaki has been lifted but Taranaki Civil Defence says people should remain cautious in or on coastal waters today.
There is no evidence of any effect from the tsunami overnight. But a tsunami does not necessarily manifest itself in a change in sea level. It can cause unusual and unexpected surges and water movements, and these can continue to occur for some time.
People swimming, surfing or boating today should be aware of the possibility of unusual and unexpected surges, currents or water movements.
Taranaki Civil Defence is appreciative of the support it has received from surf lifesaving clubs, Coastguard Taranaki, Fire Service and fire brigades, and district and regional council staff in helping to spread the word about yesterday’s tsunami alert.
