The New Zealand Met Service has issued a Severe Weather Watch for the possibility of severe gales in Taranaki early on Sunday 16 March as ex-Tropical Cyclone Lusi passes down the coast.
Taranaki Civil Defence Emergency Management is monitoring the situation.
People are advised to:
- Pick up any debris around your house that could be become airborne.
- Put rubbish bins, garden furniture and other loose items in the garage or indoors to prevent property damage.
If strong winds arrive:
- Do not walk around outside or drive unless absolutely necessary.
- Power cuts are possible in severe weather. Unplug small appliances which may be affected by electrical power surges. If power is lost unplug major appliances to reduce the power surge and possible damage when power is restored.
The MetService weather watch also says heavy rain is expected on Mt Taranaki on Sunday. However, the storm is not expected to be worse than any experienced in any Taranaki winter.
Taranaki CDEM will continue to monitor the situation and will issue further statements if and when necessary.
