Ex Cyclone Fehi precautionary evacuations in Waitara east

A coastal storm surge and high winds combined with a spring tide caused localised flooding on the east bank at the Waitara River mouth at midday today. Precautionary evacuations have been advised by Fire and Emergency NZ.

Around 30 households on Howard Street (East Quay) near the mouth of the Waitara River were advised by Fire and Emergency to evacuate their homes as a precaution. They are being advised to move to the Waitara Public Library until a Welfare Needs Assessment can occur.

Any concerned residents are requested to self-evacuate and report to the Waitara Public Library for an initial need assessment if you are unable to find shelter with family and friends.

Taranaki Civil Defence is monitoring the situation and will advise later this afternoon if further measures are required.

Port Taranaki has also closed the Lee Breakwater and public carpark.

The Met Service has issued a high wind warning for southern Taranaki. Winds gusting to 130 km or more are forecast, easing early evening.
