Taranaki Civil Defence well-equipped ahead of Cyclone Gabrielle.

12:00 AM Tue 14 February 2023

As the effects of Cyclone Gabrielle continue to be felt throughout the region, a National State of Emergency has been declared to assist regions in their local response to Cyclone Gabrielle.

Yesterday afternoon Taranaki’s Civil Defence Emergency Co-ordination (ECC) was activated to respond to Cyclone Gabrielle.

Taranaki’s Civil Defence Group Controller Todd Velvin says: “At this stage the National Statement of Emergency does not affect the Taranaki region. Our region is still well-equipped and prepared to respond to the effects of Cyclone Gabrielle.”

“We are continuing to assess the situation and work alongside our partner agencies and local councils to respond as needed.”

“People may be waking up this morning to find they are without power or seeing large amounts of debris on their property or the road. We are asking people to prioritise their safety, avoid any non-essential travel and be prepared to shelter at home.”

The situation will continue to develop throughout the day with strong wind gusts expected into late afternoon and evening. The Red – Strong Wind Warning that was issued by New Zealand Met Service has been extended until 6pm tonight.

Velvin is encouraging people to keep up to date through official sites. “We will continue to share updates through our social media channels. It is important people also check their local councils, emergency services and Te Whatu Ora Taranaki for specific updates.”

“This situation is going to continue to change throughout the day, we are asking people to be proactive about finding updates and information.”

“Remember don’t take chances, if there is a threat to your life or property, please call 111.”
